PROLOGUE;

It has been twenty years, now,

Twenty years since our worlds united together.

I remember how it had started. At least part of it;
The most powerful of the six Elements of Harmony -the Element of Magic, had been stolen by my vengeful former student; Sunset Shimmer. Princess Twilight Sparkle, newly crowned, went after her through a dimensional gateway that led her to another world, a world it's people called 'Earth'.

While she had retrieved the stolen Element, Sunset Shimmer had caused damage on Earth in the process -both physical and spiritual, before Twilight convinced her to change her ways. Because of this, Twilight and her council of Friends returned to Earth many times to undo the damage Shimmer had wrought, their true forms hidden with camouflage spells.

In that time, they'd come to know many people of Earth, or 'Humans', as they called themselves. They discovered how alike our two species were in nature, even if their world had no magic or control over the weather as our world does. Twilight and her friends had also learned of another race that had also frequently visited this world; the Transformers.

A species of metal beings, machine-like in nature, they had the ability to alter their very being to be like the machines of Earth, yet they were a species that -like the humans and the ponies; was very much alive. They hailed from a planet called Cybertron; a world very much in disrepair from a great civil war that had ravaged their lands.

At first the interactions were kept quite; only a few of us on each world knowing of each others' existence.

But it was a secret too large for any of us, even myself, to contain.

The transformers had been divided into two factions by their war; the Autobots, who wished for peace; and the Decepticons, who reveled in war. The Decepticons sought to conquer Earth and build a new Cybertron from it, but the Autobots defiantly stood in their way. Great battles against the Decepticons took place; and not one to stand back and let the helpless die; Twilight and her friends joined the fight.

And so the battles stretched far beyond the borders of the American nation, even taking place in Equestria and on Cybertron. The day had been one at last, but there was no doubt now that my people knew of their neighboring worlds, and that those same worlds now knew of us as well.

There were many who thought that the each race return to their own world and the gateways between our worlds be sealed forever. I was not one of them; I felt that such actions would only result in disaster, and in the end; tragedy. Furthermore, I believed that our races could benefit from each other, that there were many things we could teach each other, and in a greater sense, help us to reach out and unite other worlds as well.

I was not alone in this view; the leader of the Autobots, a mighty figure named Optimus Prime, also believed that the unity of our races could mean a greater future for us all. He felt that if his kind were to return to Cybertron and never come back to our worlds, then the transformers would be doomed to destroy themselves. He also saw that no amount of effort would ever completely keep the Decepticons from their ambitions, and that leaving Earth forever would only be dooming it and it's people. To Optimus, the Unity meant our Salvation.

And so it was; the three worlds were untied.

At first it seemed we'd created a haven of Hope and Prosperity for our kinds. But I'd failed to remember how -even despite the best intentions, things can change for the worse.

The Age was inevitable. Nothing anyone could have done could've prevented it. Alas, it was not the only disaster our Unity would face.

Perhaps fortunately, this time it was of no one's true fault; for I beleive that none could have ever foreseen what would arise from the Earthen Seas.

It had been close to eight years after our unity was founded, when one evening a massive creature rose from the Pacific Ocean and attacked the nation of Asia. None knew the creature's origin, but its thirst for destruction was all too easy to decipher, even Fluttershy's natural way with creatures proved useless against the monster's ambition.

A great battle raged against the creature; Pony, Human, and Transformer, all fighting the beast, lasting days without an end before it was finally brought down. We thought it was the end, many of us had hoped we'd brought extinction to a species that would otherwise annihilate us.

We were wrong.

Not two months later, another creature appeared. It attacked the continent of Australia, and again a battle raged on for days. The Council of Friendship had attempted to use the Elements of Harmony to defeat the monster, but so far from the Tree that grew them; they were weak. It didn't stop, and our forces couldn't keep fighting on forever, the Elements only providing a slight edge.

It was realized that we needed a new method of defense, and in the case of these monsters -which had become known as 'Kaiju'; we needed one very soon.

As the unity between the three worlds strengthened anew because of the attacks, a solution had come to us. They were called 'Jaegers'; massive humanoid machines the size of the kaiju, built from the knowledge of the transformers, and fueled by the magic of unicorns, and formed from the driving spirit of humanity, they were so massive and powerful that two beings were needed to pilot them; and when the next kaiju attacked, it fell quickly.

Many Jaegers were built after that, each one stationed in a different country, and even a few in Equestria and Cybertron, should the beast find those worlds, or creatures like them awaken there. Whenever a kaiju struck, there was always a jaeger to stop it.

As time went on, the strain put on the unicorns that provided their magic to power the jaegers could no longer go unnoticed. Working together, the greatest minds of the three races created an artificial magic, a source of everlasting energy. Jaegers were then given enhancements like wings or horns to channel excess magic to fight the kaiju.

Soon it was realized that this energy could also power entire cities; and thus –even with the ever-present threat of the kaiju, the first decade in our alliance had brought forth a bright and hopeful future.

I never saw pleasure in the slaughtering of these creatures, taking a life had never set with me. But our worlds were in danger then, and what had to be done was done.

Still, the jaegers always stood as a symbol to the people; a symbol of hope that we would always overcome whatever challenges faced, no matter how great. The brave pilots of these machines were looked upon with pride and respect, for they possessed courage few could match when facing the beasts.

Every time a battle ended, there was celebration, a joy that the people were safe once again.

Then came what many had first thought of as a time of darkness; one day, two kaiju rose from the pacific, and together the beasts laid waste to Japan. While they were defeated in the end, the damage done was still present.

In the wake of the disaster, fear spread that two more kaiju attack the next time. And so they created the Matriarch; a jaeger that combined the traits of the three pony races and the adaptability of the transformers. When the next attack came –two kaiju as feared, the Matriarch was able to put an end to them in time.

But, while this may have come as an innovation and a necessary step forward, it was also –I realize, looking back, where things began to fall away; Soon all jaegers were refitted to be ‘Alicorn Jaegers’ in preparation for greater kaiju attacks that we were now certain would come. It was learned during this time that humans were best compatible with the artificial magic, so the jaegers became mostly piloted by humans, despite the valiance of both the Autobots and ponies who’d also piloted them.

The years passed further into the second decade, and it became clear that despite the unity and equality that had carried us this far together, it was clear that Humanity had now come first.

I and Optimus had looked past this many times, for the sake of the Alliance, but the subtle growing disdain for our races became more apparent with the passing of time.

Sadly, there were all too many of those who’d also taken notice of the mistreatment, who'd felt old wounds torn open, and all too many who felt angered by it.

As much as it pained me to admit; our alliance was slowly falling to pieces. Many ponies and transformers had returned to their worlds, even my sister could no longer stand to set hoof on Earth.

But I stayed; I refused to let indifference bring the end of what had made us all so strong in the last seventeen years. “You are as stubborn as a mule!” Luna had told me, and with no shame, I agreed. Optimus stayed on Earth as well, fearing for all our futures, and not just that of his race.

I made myself a promise that I would not abandon this world.

And then a secret project was completed and unveiled; and I broke my promise.

Fearing legions of kaiju would one day rise all at once, too many for the jaegers to handle; they’d constructed a new super-hybrid, a centaur jaeger with alicorn attributes. But it was it’s christened name that made me understand why Luna left Earth; it’s design that made my blood run cold; and it’s new and dangerous power that made me understand why they’d kept it’s construction hidden from even me.

They called it… Nightmare Moon

I’d learned that they’d discovered the nature of Dark Magic, and that they’d created their own form of it to power this… monstrosity.

So, this is what our alliance has come to? Playing with powers none can understand? Powers that had turned my sister and our foalhood friend evil? Creating a being who’d been feared in legend for a thousand years? I couldn’t bear it, but I could also not oppose it; so I left, I returned to Equestria, returned to my home where I’d been born, raised, and understood by it’s people.

While I may never return to Earth, I still have some faith left in the alliance, and I believe in Optimus Prime, who remains to this day on that world, holding the frail remaining bonds together. Truly he is stronger than I.

Princess Celestia returned the quill to the inkwell. She looked back on the pages that she’d decorated with her memories. For a time there was silence as she said nothing, and then slowly she closed her eyes and sighed heavily.

Glittering midnight blue magic sparkled around the journal as it closed. Celestia looked to her side to see her sister staring at her, “Anypony would have also left, if they were in your place,” Luna said, her eyes showing sympathy, “You are still stronger than I am, sister,” she said reassuringly.

Celestia’s gaze drifted back to her journal. “I am?” she said, but she didn’t sound bitter or confused, but she just seemed weary, tired. Defeated.

Luna put a hoof to her sister’s shoulder, “You know that you are.” She said, trying to add a touch of lightheartedness to her words,

“But Knowing and Believing are two different things.” Said Celestia. She looked again to her sister. “I still feel as though I’ve let everypony –everyone, down, Luna. And yet, I- I cannot go back. Not after what they’ve created.”

“And neither can I” Luna said after a moment, “but it will not spell the end for any of our worlds.” She added.

Celestia nodded, though she did not seem convinced. “I pray that you are right, Luna; for it is all I believe that I can do, anymore.” And before Luna could say anything in response, Princess Celestia quietly retired for the night.

Once she had gone, Princess Luna looked at the closed journal of her sister. She sighed, "Goodnight, sister." she said to the empty air as she returned to her turret where she'd watch over all of Equestria.

I really wish that I could display some illustration art to go along with these things I'm writing. But because I am having major computer hiccups (or maybe all computers and related technology are actually alive and for some reason really hate me) I'm stuck with only doing cut'n'paste clipart.

Ah well :/
